The birthday of Savitri Bai Phule, the pioneer of women's education in India, was celebrated by Punjab Istri Sabha Ludhiana at Shaheed Karnail Singh Isru Bhavan.
A discussion was organized, which was presided over by Dr. Gurcharan Kaur Kochhar, the president of the organization. Speaking on this occasion, she said that it is everyone's responsibility to remember Savitri Bai Phule's struggle for girls' education and the status of women in the society. She undertook this task at a time when the society did not allow the birth of a girl child.Istri Sabha Vice President Kusum Lata said that they opened different schools for girls. Today, once again, through the New Education Policy, a conspiracy is being hatched to deprive the children of the general and especially the weaker sections from education. Eminent social worker and convener of Social Thinkers Forum Dr Arun Mitra said that history is being distorted. Outdated non-scientific thinking is being promoted. Today once again there is a need to preserve the achievements brought by our forefathers after a long struggle. General Secretary Amarjit Kaur Goria said that the entire society will have to raise its voice as one against injustice.
Speaking on this occasion, General Secretary of Bhartiya Khet Mazdoor Union Gulzar Goria said that even today the oppressed people in the society have to fight for their rights. Even after 75 years of independence, people are being divided on the basis of caste, gender, religion and region, and their rule is being maintained. Organising Secretary Anu Bala moderated the forum. Among others Kulwant Kaur, Rajwinder Kaur and Co-convener of Social Thinkers Forum M.S Bhatia, expressed their views.Communist Party of India Member of Parliament Comrade Geeta Mukherjee, who fought for women's rights, was also remembered on her birthday which falls on January 8. She vociferously raised the issue of reservation for women in Parliament and spent her entire life fighting for women's rights. The meeting decided that the Punjab Istri Sabha will continue the struggle for women to get their status in the society. In the near future it will open a counseling center in which the problems of women will be heard and the issues will be taken up with administration for their redressal . Dr. Kochhar thanked everyone for attending the discussion.
